The Encompass Trust ( http://www.encompasstrust.org / ) “On the 12th October, 2002 Daniel Braden was killed in the Bali bombing. We believe that out of this tragic death some good must come; hence we have decided to set up a charity called ENCOMPASS. The principle method of fulfilling our aims will be through excellence in education using specific establishments and methods to promote an unbiased understanding of other people's beliefs and cultural backgrounds. This will be achieved through bi-directional, cross-cultural adventure programs that we have developed which aim to promote understanding and tolerance between young people of different backgrounds, faiths and cultures and an appreciation of the equal value of others. Encompass is working in collaboration with the Tall Ships Youth Trust and the Jubilee Sailing Trust. Both these are well established charities with over 70 years of tall ship operating experience between them. They have been extremely encouraging and have strongly confirmed our view on the suitability of training ships as a catalyst to bring disparate groups together, to changed entrenched attitudes and to open minds.”
Mar Elias Educational Institutions ( http://www.m-e-c.org/ ) “Situated in the Arab village of Ibillin in Galilee, MEEI educates children of all ages from all over Israel, beginning at the Myriam Bawardi Kindergarten and Elementary School, to High School and Hi-tech College - as well as School for Gifted Pupils - and on through Mar Elias University. The central ethos of MEEI is pluralism, reconciliation and a respect for one another's differences, whether cultural or religious, Muslim, Jew, Druze and Christian have always worked together on the staff at MEEI. MEEI is committed to providing excellence in teaching while fostering a learning environment that is open to students of all faith traditions, ethnicities and nationalities. It fosters respect, acceptance and concern for all human beings. Through nurturing a sense of responsibility and developing a critical habit of mind students are prepared to face the challenges of their future. MEEI encourages students to value their heritage and to develop and strengthen connections with their cultures and communities. Students have the opportunity to develop academic and creative skills and talents which will prepare them for life-long learning and service to their local and wider communities.”
Neve Shalom ~ Wahat al-Salam ( http://www.nswas.org/ ) “Neve Shalom~Wahat al-Salam (NSWAS) is a village in Israel of Jews and Palestinian Arabs of Israeli citizenship. Situated equidistant from Jerusalem and Tel Aviv-Jaffa, NSWAS was founded in the early 1970s on land originally leased from the adjacent Latrun Monastery. By 2004, some 50 families had come to live in the village, with an equal number of Jews and Arabs. Eventually the village will include about 140 homes. The members of NSWAS are demonstrating the possibility of coexistence between Jews and Palestinians by developing a community based on mutual acceptance, respect and cooperation. Democratically governed and owned by its members, the community is not affiliated with any political party or movement. NSWAS gives practical expression to its vision through provision of bilingual, binational schooling for the children of the village and surrounding area, it's own School for Peace, which engages in encounter work between Arabs and Jews, and through the Doumia~Sakinah Pluralistic Spiritual Centre”
